New Breeding Program Aimed At Keeping Moderate Republicans From Going Extinct | The Onion - America's Finest News Source

WASHINGTON—Saying the now critically endangered species of politician is at high risk for complete extinction within the next 10 years, Beltway-area conservationists announced plans Monday for a new captive breeding program designed to save moderate Republicans.

According to members of the Initiative to Protect the Political Middle (IPPM), centrist Republicans, who once freely roamed the nation calling for both economic deregulation and a return to Reagan-era tax rates on the wealthy, are in dire need of protection, having lost large portions of their natural terrain to the highly territorial Evangelical and Tea Party breeds.

"Our new program is designed to isolate the few remaining specimens of moderate Republicans, mate them in captivity, and then safely release these rare and precious creatures back into the electorate," said IPPM’s Cynthia Rollins, who traces the decline of the species to changes in the political climate and rampant, predatory fanaticism. "Within our safe, enclosed habitats, these middle-of-the-road Republican Party members can freely support increased funding for public education and even gay rights without being threatened by the far-right subgenus."

It is going to be a long long journey on this road to avoid total extinction of this particular species. I think we very well have seen the last of them.

I think they need to get tissue samples from Snowe and Collins to start with. They seem to be about the only elected officials that place their oars in the water of moderate sanity these days.

This is an interesting problem for the right that wants to deny both genetics which is supported by the theory of evolution (science OMG!!), and the right to life at the same time. This program just might end up in front of the conservative and activist supreme court...!

Unfortunately the last remaining moderate Republicans are far beyond the help of Viagra. . .

They better enlist the help of those who saved the California Condor*.

*Can you picture twenty 'moderate' Republicans locked up in the San Diego Zoo with lockers full of Viagra and Cialis. . . oh, sorry, too much information.

We just need to get rid of the "Tea Party" They represent the new Christian Taliban, and are determined to de-fund education to make schools private -for profit- religious centers.

Every Red State is cutting funds in Education and making it impossible for teachers to really survive under the pension cuts and benefit cuts. They are doing this in a very meticulous way. Some States already can't afford to have buses picking up the students. They will need to start charging parents, or else the parents will have to drive their children to school.

Never mind the cost of gasoline and the fact that many parents need to drive to work at odd times. This will only make Education even more difficult to attain for many children in poor areas.

We are already # 18 in the world when it comes to Science and Math. However, the Tea Party does not believe in Education and Climate change. To them, we should only believe what the bible says. Look at Santorum. Doesn't he remain people of a Muslim leader? Trying to get women back to the dark ages? If we don't watch it, the Tea Party will have regulations next on women's dressing codes, and Parkas will be in fashion in the good old USA.

And they call President Obama "The Muslim" What a bunch of trash are the Tea Party representatives.

We have never seen a crop of lunatics like the ones running for office this time around. How about Norquist and his pledges? Every day the Constitution means less and less for these people.

I doubt it. The response of the GOP to losing elections has been to double-down on the crazy, and to blame each other for not being conservative enough.

What is more likely is that the GOP will be reduced to a fourth-tier regional party occasionally allowed to comment on important legislation, and the Democrats will actually become the "conservative" party. The vacuum on the left will bring a new party into play, and the GOP will vanish into the mists of history along with the Whigs.

Their brand has been massively damaged during the last two years. Kids reaching voting age today are going to remember the GOP as old, angry white men with an unhealthy fixation on other people's sex lives, whose lips are mechanically clamped to the Koch brothers' super-rich agenda.

Well, I wish them luck in trying to bring the dying species back, but I have a bad feeling the TP breed are not going to allow it. The TP breed are on the hunt to kill off all Moderate Repubs off the political map. After all, they think Moderate Repubs are RINOs, and RINOs are not good for the party. So the hunt will continue. It will be a sad day when the TP take-over is 100% complete and the Moderate Repubs are extinct.

There's been sporadic unconfirmed reports of moderate conservative sightings in some parts of AZ., but a spokeman for the Goldwater Institute downplayed the sightings. The institute claims the reported sightings were just wishful thinking on the part of long time Arizonans.

Governor Jan Brewer issued a press release detailing a bounty offer for any pelts proved to be moderately Republican. The last confirmed sighting of a moderate Republican was in 1986, in Graham county.

Those moderates may take a look at the Democrats, come to the realization that despite all of the foaming hyperbole, Obama's about as moderate/centrist as they come, and conclude that they're better off in the Democratic Party.

The GOP can then rebrand itself as the Lyndon Larouche Memorial Party and the Teabags can resume their circular firing squads all by themselves.

A noble effort indeed, but I'm afraid that it may be too late. Its been a half-century since the GOP began appealing to hatred through the Southern Strategy. Since then, they've sought office by infecting the already weak-minded with fear, hatred, resentment and envy for anyone not white, Christian and hetero. The infection has by now mutated and the bat$hit crazy nucleobase seems already prominent in the GOP double-helix, perhaps at various levels ranging from inert to highly active depending on the age of the person. Most of those who are least susceptible are unfortunately too old to procreate.

I recommend the harvest of DNA from Eisenhower, Dirksen and Rockefeller. Though geneticists should indeed consider harvesting DNA from republicans such as Susan Collins, Olympia Snowe, Condoleeza Rice, Colin Powell and William Cohen, any DNA starting at Goldwater is highly suspect and should undergo rigourous inspection (and possible alteration) before use.

Geez. So much work to do.

I remember Goldwater and moderate Republicans with great admiration. As a kid, I'd go hunting moderate Republicans with my dad and uncle Joe. We once saw a herd of moderate Republicans near the state capitol, but in my youthful exhuberance, I spooked them by asking one if they supported Ronald Reagans' tax increases, and they fled! Their speed was very impressive, with some leaping in full run right through barely opened doors, and others seemingly dissapearing in crowds of dark-suited lobbyists.

We never bagged a moderate, but as my dad said: "It's the experience we're after, and not the kill. We want these animals to be around for your kids." I'm glad my dad's not here to see the demise of moderate Republicans. It would break his heart.

I thought they were called Democrats now.

Not yet, but it is very possibly a positive but unintended consequence of the program. They would certainly like to be - as opposed to becoming part of the Teapublikan alternative they fled - and, perhaps, the civilizing process will cause them to emerge from captivity as "neo-Democrats." But first, they will have to experience a profound humanizing process, be re-habituated toward the truth and detoxified from their Fox News addiction. Only then will their minds be clear enough to actually engage in the process of self-evaluation, sober reflection, tolerance, non-biased conceptualizing, inductive reasoning, respect for valid information and opinions based on facts. It's a long road back, but we liberals will be their for them every step of the way, as long as their spirit is willing.

The only way this new breeding program is going to work is with a contemporaneous effort to cull the heard of the new invasive species. They could eventually prove to be even hardier than they were in their original habitat, and we should learn a lesson from the rampant population explosion of zebra muscles and asian carp. The new sub-strata shouldn't be difficult to deal with now, since inbreeding has rendered them vulnerable to predators from the Democratic Party, but if we wait too long, further mutations might create a super-fit subgenus that could acquire greater survival traits. Perhaps we should start with some of the early breeding pairs, like Mr. Santorum and Herman Cain, both of whom have a strong drive to reproduce.

They may be able to restore the breed in some form of benign captivity, but once released back into the wild, they will be luncheon meat for the mutations which have all but forced them into extinction in the first place. Let's not forget that the mutant Teapublikan breed survives and thrives on adversity and repeated defeats which only makes the pack stronger, even as their numbers dwindle. Their ferocity will increase over time, rendering their cave-sharing elders less and less of a force in the survival paradigm. Nay, the only way to induce a safe return of the breed into its natural habitat as it existed pre-mutation is to destroy the mutants or to control them by forcing them into controlled political environments, like South Carolina, Arizona and Iowa where the violence they perpetrate on the electorate at large can be effectively controlled from without. Mass sterilization or the institution of mandatory abortions and involuntary contraception secretly introduced into their water supply might also be required. These undead do not go lightly into that good night.
